Education Description
The PhD studentship awards provide funding for research projects with Commonwealth-related issues. The Round Table: The Commonwealth Journal of International Affairs and Routledge, the journal’s publisher, together with the ACU, are sponsoring the studentship prizes.

Every year, there are two studentship prizes with a maximum value of GBP 5500 each. The first is accessible to PhD candidates from universities in the United Kingdom, however they need not be inhabitants of the country.

The second one is open to PhD students currently enrolled at ACU member institutions in Commonwealth countries other than the UK as well as Chevening and Commonwealth Scholarship recipients who are PhD students at any Commonwealth institution outside of the UK.

One of the two eligible studentship fellowships in 2019–2020 helped a PhD candidate travel to the United Kingdom for their research. However, this studentship award will help the chosen candidate do research in their home nation in 2020–2021 owing to the COVID-19 pandemic. It might be very feasible to offer a travel research prize once more in 2021–2022, if limits permit.A Congress of Universities of the Empire was held in 1912 in London, United Kingdom, at the University of London’s suggestion. 53 universities were represented. The Association of Universities of the British Commonwealth was created in 1948 to take the position of the Bureau. The Association received a Royal Charter under its new name, The Association of Commonwealth Universities, in its jubilee year of 1963. In 1986, Her Majesty the Queen, the Commonwealth’s head of state, was named the ACU’s patron. After 33 years of service, Her Majesty transferred her sponsorship to The Duchess of Sussex, who in 2019 took over as the ACU’s patron.
